The fastest way usually depends on which 1099 you need.
For most Forms 1099, your first step should be to log in to the payer’s or issuer’s online account portal and look for tax documents, statements, or forms. If you cannot find it there, request a copy directly from the payer or issuing agency.
You can also use your IRS Individual Online Account to access tax records. The IRS says your online account can show available information return documents, such as certain Forms W-2 and certain 1099s. You can also get a Wage and Income Transcript, which shows data reported to the IRS on Form 1099 series returns. That transcript is generally available for the past 10 tax years. However, for the currently processing tax year, the information may not yet be complete until the payer reports it to the IRS.
If you need the information reported to the IRS, rather than the original payer’s form, the Wage and Income Transcript is often the most practical online option.
If you need an actual copy of a previously filed tax return with the 1099 attached, the IRS says you generally must request a copy of the return using Form 4506. That is different from a transcript, and it is not the same as downloading a current form online.
If the missing form is a Social Security benefit statement, that is usually Form SSA-1099, not IRS Form 1099. You can generally download a replacement online through your my Social Security account. The most recent tax year’s SSA-1099 is generally available beginning February 1.
If you still do not receive a missing or corrected Form 1099 after contacting the payer, the IRS says you may contact the IRS for help after the end of February. Even if the form is missing, you generally should still file your return on time and report the correct income based on your records.
