Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is shown on your individual income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040SR). It is labeled “Adjusted Gross Income” on the form, and is typically located near the bottom of the first page of the return.

Because the IRS may occasionally renumber lines, always identify AGI by its label (“Adjusted Gross Income”) rather than relying only on a specific line number for a future year.

AGI on Form 1040 (most recent years)

On recent Forms 1040, AGI appears on line 11, but you should confirm the exact line number on the version of Form 1040 for the tax year you are filing. Look for the line specifically labeled “Adjusted Gross Income,” usually just before the section for “Standard deduction or itemized deductions” and “Taxable income.”

AGI on Form 1040SR (most recent years)

On recent Forms 1040SR, AGI is shown on line 11a, labeled “Adjusted Gross Income,” with a related line (such as 11b) that may carry the AGI amount forward. As with Form 1040, always rely on the “Adjusted Gross Income” label on the form you are using for the specific tax year, rather than assuming the line number will stay the same. If You Do Not Have a Copy of Your Return

If you do not have your tax return, you can find your prioryear AGI through:

  • Your IRS Online Account, which shows key tax return information, including AGI for filed years.
  • An IRS tax transcript (for example, a Tax Return Transcript) obtained using the IRS “Get Transcript” service online or by mail.

These options allow you to look up the AGI that the IRS has on file for a particular tax year, which is often needed for efile identity verification.
